When it comes to your wedding photos, it’s all about telling the story of your day—the raw, beautiful emotions, the in-between moments, and the love you share with your favourite people. I always recommend couples prioritise photos that will make them feel something every time they look back. Here are some must-have shots to consider:
The First Look
Whether it’s before the ceremony or as you walk down the aisle, this is a moment filled with anticipation and pure emotion. It’s one of my favourite moments to capture because it’s so raw and real.
Candid Moments with Your Loved Ones
From your friends laughing during cocktail hour to your parents stealing a proud glance, these are the moments you might not even notice in the rush of the day. Candid shots are what make your album feel alive and true to your personality.
Couple Portraits
Steal away for a few minutes after the ceremony for intimate couple shots. These don’t need to be stiff or posed. The aim is to capture your connection in a way that feels authentic to you, whether that’s laughing together, stealing a quiet kiss, or simply being wrapped up in each other.
The Details
All the little things that make your day yours—your bouquet, the rings, your wedding stationery—are part of your story. I love finding unique ways to showcase these details against the backdrop of your day.
The Sunset Photos
There’s something magical about the golden hour. If you can, sneak out for a few relaxed photos at sunset. It’s a great way to spend a quiet moment together while soaking up the beauty of the evening light.
The Dance Floor Magic
Whether it’s your first dance or your grandma busting out her best moves, capturing the dance floor fun is a must! These shots add so much personality to your gallery.
When Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?
Booking your wedding photographer early is one of the best decisions you can make. Here’s why:
12 to 18 Months in Advance
I recommend securing your photographer as soon as you’ve chosen your wedding date, typically 12 to 18 months in advance. This is especially important if you’re getting married during peak wedding season (spring and summer) or on a popular weekend. The best photographers book up fast, so don’t wait!
Once You Have Your Venue
Once your venue is locked in, booking your photographer should be next on your list. The venue will play a big part in shaping your wedding style, and your photographer can help you envision how they’ll capture the magic of the space. Plus, they can start discussing timelines and key moments with you early on.
Consider Engagement Sessions
If you’re interested in having engagement photos done (which I highly recommend!), this is another reason to book early. Engagement sessions are not only a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera, but they also give you a chance to work with your photographer before the big day. Plus, these photos are perfect for save-the-dates or wedding websites!
Booking Later
If your wedding is coming up in less than a year, don’t worry! Some photographers may still have availability, especially if your date is during the off-season or on a weekday. It’s always worth reaching out to see if there’s a spot open, but the sooner, the better to avoid disappointment.
Wedding Photography Tips: Keep it Laid-Back & Authentic
Now that you’ve got your essential shots in mind, here are some tips to help you feel relaxed in front of the camera and make the most of your day:
Be Yourselves: The best wedding photos happen when you’re being you. Forget about perfection and focus on enjoying the day. I always say 'Emotion over Perfection'. If you’re laughing, crying, or dancing like no one’s watching, it’ll shine through in your photos.
Trust Your Photographer: You’ve chosen someone who gets your vibe, so trust them to work their magic. The more relaxed you are, the more your photos will feel like you.
Plan Time for Photos: Don’t stress about the timeline, but it helps to set aside time for your couple portraits, family photos, and a few spontaneous moments. Your photographer can guide you on how to fit this naturally into the flow of the day but don't be surprised if your photographer comes to steal you away when you are eating your dessert because the beautiful sunset is disappearing fast!
Focus on Connection, Not Posing: The most meaningful photos come from genuine moments—whether that’s a shared laugh or a quiet embrace. I’ll guide you into natural positions that feel comfortable, so you can focus on being in the moment with each other.
Enjoy the Day: You’ve spent so much time planning, but once the day arrives, let go and soak it all in. The more fun you’re having, the more your photos will capture the joy and emotion of your day.
